Eskom’s R7 Billion Transformer Plan Takes Shape

Eskom is gearing up to transform its grid by lining up transformer suppliers to compete for R7 billion worth of contracts over the next four years. This initiative is crucial for adding new generation capacity to the grid.

Massive Infrastructure Rollout

Over the next decade, Eskom aims to procure 101 large-scale and various other transformers as part of its infrastructure build rollout. The goal is to connect 53,000MW of new generation capacity to the grid. Segomoco Scheppers, Eskom’s Managing Director for Transmission, highlighted the importance of innovative project delivery models and partnerships to drive the accelerated delivery of the Transmission Development Plan (TDP).

  • Strategic Projects: These include a priority programme to ensure timely implementation.

Tender Process and Supplier Selection

The National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) issued an open tender enquiry on March 14, 2023. Five suppliers have been selected to manufacture power transformers, supplementing the limited local supply capacity.

  • Local and International Suppliers: Most of the selected suppliers have an international footprint, ensuring a blend of local and global expertise.
  • Delivery Schedule: The first batch of 26 large-scale transformers is expected to be delivered between 12 and 36 months from the order placement. This is crucial for increasing transmission capacity for customers and independent power producers, contributing to economic growth.

Framework Agreement and Future Batches

NTCSA has designed a framework agreement to procure 101 transformers from the selected suppliers to meet demand until the end of the 2028 financial year. Subsequent tenders will promote more local manufacturing as the supply chain strengthens within South Africa.

  • Accreditation of Factories: NTCSA has accredited 22 factories, both locally and internationally, for various classes of transformers.

Priority Programmes and Transmission Projects

The transformer contract includes 34 transformers for two priority programmes aimed at accelerating transmission infrastructure delivery.

  • Existing Substations: 25 projects at existing substations will provide additional transformers to unlock 13,000MW of new generation capacity.
  • Expedited Transmission Projects: 22 projects are set to unlock 24,000MW of grid connection capacity.

“In summary, NTCSA is developing 47 projects with the potential to unlock 37,000MW of grid connection capacity between 2025 and 2033. These projects are at different stages of implementation in terms of design, procurement, and construction,” Eskom stated.

Commitment to Infrastructure Development

NTCSA is set to undertake the largest infrastructure rollout programme since the inception of Eskom’s Transmission Division. The commitment involves delivering 170 transformers to bring on board 105,865 MVA transformer capacity and 14,218km of new transmission lines by 2032.

Regular Updates

Eskom assures that NTCSA will provide regular updates on these projects and initiatives, keeping stakeholders informed about the progress and impact of these transformative efforts.

With these initiatives, Eskom aims to significantly boost its infrastructure and ensure a more reliable and efficient power supply across South Africa.
